FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

How do I know my skin type and how do I care for it?

Answer:

Knowing your skin type can sometimes be tricky. Here are some tips on how to establish your skin type and how to care for it….

Oily Skin

You will recognise an oily skin because it becomes very shiny, and tends to throw off makeup early in the day. It requires much more cleaning than a dry skin.

Do not use skin tonics with the idea of closing the pores. Your pores must be free to function; otherwise little pockets of stale, oily matter will collect under the skin, and later erupt as spots.

Blackheads are also a common problem on an oily skin. Remember, oily skin only becomes problem skin when the pores fail to function and the oil forms plugs in the pores.

To keep an oily, blackhead-prone skin in clear condition, dry-clean morning and evening with Katherine Corbett’s Open Pore Lotion. This lotion is a strong grease solvent and will keep the pores free of oil. Do not wash or otherwise clean the skin before using Open Pore Lotion.

Dry Skin

A dry skin tends to flake. It produces very little oil and tends to lose moisture causing the surface layer to shed rapidly. Then the skin loses its glow, becomes coarse, develops lines, and even red veins.

Clean dry skin with a gentle and protective formulation – Katherine Corbett’s Cleansing Emulsion. This is a light fluid cream, which spreads easily. Using the palm of your hand spread over the entire face, and wipe off with dry tissues. Makeup may be applied immediately.

Avoid strong cleansers or creams which cling to the skin and which require water-soaked cotton wool or tonics to remove the last traces.

Where loss of moisture is the problem, a mineral water spray such as Lisdoonvarna Spa Hydrating Spray can be more effective than oily moisturisers.

Combination Skin

Many people have a dry skin with an oily panel running down the centre, including the nose and chin or ‘t-zone’ areas. This is termed ‘combination skin’ and the two areas require separate cleansing methods, using both Open Pore Lotion and Cleansing Emulsion.

Moisturisers and skin foods are not usually necessary for this type of skin.

Very Sensitive Skin

This type of skin is unable to hold sufficient moisture to keep it from scaling. Excessive use of oily moisturisers only adds to the problem. In such cases more than a very modest amount of oil can strip off the surface cells and end up coarsening the skin.

The main need is moisture, not oil. Spray with Lisdoonvarna Spa Hydrating Spray. This mineral rich water is from a natural spring and it may be sprayed on the eyelids also, for a beneficial effect.

Many sensitive skins are allergic to a wide range of cosmetics. If trying out a new product, first do a patch test over a small area for any sign of allergy.

Question:

What is a blackhead and why do I get them?

Answer:

Blackheads appear when the skin cannot clean itself properly so this is the most likely reason you’re getting them. The black that you see on the surface of the skin isn’t dirt but oxidised oil – just like when a cut raw potato turns black when exposed to air, oil from the skin oxidises in just the same way. The black at the pore opening is only a thin layer at the top of a plug of oil and waste matter.

We suggest our most popular product for this problem, Open Pore Lotion. Open Pore Lotion works like a ‘dry cleaner’ on your skin to wipe away the surface black layer and gradually dissolve the plug of oily waste matter underneath.

Question:

My teenage son suffers terribly from spotty skin and blackheads on his face, neck and shoulders – what can I suggest he try to help with this embarrassing problem?

Answer:

There’s nothing worse for a teenager than spots and blackheads. It is not only physically upsetting, but it can lead to emotional problems too.

Encourage your teen to take a proactive approach to his skin condition and help him to understand that it will hopefully not last forever. You should check your son’s diet firstly and ensure that he’s eating a well-balanced, healthy diet – avoiding crisps, snack/junk food and too many pre-prepared meals. He should be drinking plenty of fresh water daily which will help flush out the entire body and help eliminate toxins which can cause excess oil and waste matter building up in the body.

The pores of the skin must be free to function fully otherwise little pockets of stale, oily matter will collect under the skin … and later, erupt as spots.

Blackheads may also be a problem so to keep skin clear, ‘dry clean’ by using Open Pore Lotion to wipe away the surface black layer and gradually dissolve the plug of oily waste matter underneath.

Question:

Why is my skin sensitive?

Answer:

Sensitive skin can be caused by many factors and can cause a lot of irritation and soreness if the wrong products are used on it. This type of skin is unable to hold sufficient moisture to keep it from scaling. Excessive use of oily moisturisers only adds to the problem. In such cases more than a very modest amount of oil can strip off the surface cells and end up coarsening the skin.

The main need is moisture – not oil. Spray with Lisdoonvarna Spa Hydrating Spray. This mineral rich water is from a natural spring and it may be sprayed on the eyelids also, for beneficial effect.

Many sensitive skins are allergic to a wide range of cosmetics. If trying out a new product, first do a test patch over a small area for any sign of allergy.

Question:

Why does my skin flake?

Answer:

Flaky skin is often caused when the skin doesn’t produce enough oil. It can also happen when the skin looses essential moisture – air conditioning, central heating and extremes in weather can cause this. Flaking skin is when the surface layer is shed rapidly, resulting in the skin loosing its glow and becoming coarse.

We suggest if you have dry facial skin, to avoid using strong cleansers or creams which cling to the skin and which require water-soaked cotton wool or tonics to remove the last traces. Instead, try Katherine Corbett’s Cleansing Emulsion – a gentle and protective formulation in a light fluid cream, which spreads easily. You can also help replace lost moisture by using our Lisdoonvarna Spa Hydrating Spray which can, for some, be more effective than oily moisturisers.

For flaky legs and body skin, our Natural Grapeseed Body Oil is an ultra-light oil, ideal for smoothing on the body, arms and legs. It’s immediately absorbed with absolutely no greasy after-feel and it won’t stain your clothes.

Question:

Why won’t my spots go?

Answer:

You could be suffering from a hormonal imbalance, which is very common in young people and in middle-aged women. A hormone imbalance can cause major skin upsets and may cause your skin to produce additional amounts of oil than it’s used to. Keep spots and blackheads at bay by limiting the amount you touch your skin and by using a good grease solvent such as Katherine Corbett’s Open Pore Lotion. This will act as a ‘dry cleaner’ for the skin and will help to dissolve the plugs of oily waste matter below the skin’s surface.

Question:

My skin is constantly oily even though I cleanse regularly – what can I do?

Answer:

You will recognise an oily skin because it becomes very shin, and tends to throw off makeup early in the day. Although it requires much more cleaning than dry skin, over-cleansing of the skin will only make your skin more oily as it tries to restore it’s natural PH balance. An oily skin requires a good grease solvent such as Open Pore Lotion used once or twice a day to keep the pores unblocked and to prevent blackheads.

And remember, squeezing and picking blemishes and blackheads might make you think your skin looks better, but you’re actually doing a lot of damage to the surrounding skin and could also be infecting other areas of your skin just by touching it with your fingers – resulting in nasty spots and yet more oil!
